The Transformative Power of Sound Therapy in Stress Management

Healthcare Business Review

Christopher McConnell, Orthopedic Residency Director, the University of Rochester Medical Center
Tweet

Sound healing therapy has been gaining more gravitas in our large and developing medical community and its impact appears to be widespread. From the application in-clinic to the use from practitioner to practitioner, more holistic approaches to healing are being accepted, especially when outcomes can be substantial. As an alternative therapy approach,in isolation or utilized in common with other therapeutic approaches, sound healing has aided in a number of my patients’ recoveries. A large component of my clinical practice centers around the rehabilitation of individuals who have sustained a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI). Utilizing sound therapy, with and without other treatment modalities in clinical andin-home settings has aided in their holistic recovery by reducing anxiety and Kinesiophobia. Sentiments from patients have described the experience had allowed them to achieve a “free state” to take on rehabilitation exercises day after day despite the recovery process being long and enduring.

Within our medical practice, colleagues of mine are using sound healing therapies to help maintain a state of mindfulness and overall mental wellness. In a time of everchanging challenges within healthcare and an extensive burden on healthcare providers, regardless of discipline, avenues to promote mindfulness and wellness for employees are starting to take priority. Many of our clinical staff have started to use sound healing therapy and gauged frequencies such as 174 and 528hz. Even when time is of the essence, playing these frequencies on music applications through your phone or laptop has been helpful.

Whole-life balance and stress management are also key when it comes to enduring the rigor of medical education. A number of our physical therapy residents have utilized sound healing therapy on apps, or even through YouTube, to listen to healing frequencies while studying, exercising, or reading. Subjectively, they report that this allows them to decompress and support a level state for the day-in and day-out challenges they face.

Personal experience indeed speaks louder. I have used sound therapy myself both with a sound healing practitioner while at home reading, completing clinical documentation or even household chores. I find this immensely helpful in allowing me to unwind from the stresses of the day in and out, fostering healthy beliefs for the upcoming challenges that we all encounter.
